At Kings Kava, we celebrate more than just a love for kava—we honor the deep cultural roots and sacred stories that have carried this ancient beverage through generations. Among the Pacific Islands, few tales are as moving or meaningful as the legend of Tongan Kava, a story that we proudly share and respect in every shell we serve.
A Legacy Rooted in Sacrifice and Spirit
For centuries, in places like Tonga, Fiji, and Vanuatu, kava has been more than a relaxing drink—it is a vital part of spiritual ceremonies, social bonding, and ancestral connection. Used in everything from marriages and funerals to the coronation of chiefs, kava is considered sacred. And nowhere is this sacred connection more beautifully woven into culture than in the Kingdom of Tonga.
The Legend of Tongan Kava
Long ago, on a quiet island in Tonga, lived a humble couple named Fevanga and Fefafa. They led a modest life but were filled with love and joy, especially after the birth of their beloved daughter, Kava kilia mai Faa’imata.
One fateful day, the King of Tonga and his men landed on the island, tired and hungry after a long day of fishing in rough seas. Seeking shelter and food, they were warmly welcomed by Fevanga and Fefafa, who were honored by the King’s unexpected visit.
Fevanga searched the island desperately for food to offer the King, but found nothing. In a profound act of sacrifice and devotion, Fevanga made the unimaginable decision—he gave up his only daughter to provide a feast for the King.
Deeply moved by this gesture, the King refused the offering and instead honored the girl’s memory. He decreed that her name and sacrifice would be remembered for all time.
Days later, from the place where the girl was buried, two plants began to grow—one from her head and one from her feet. A small mouse approached and nibbled on the first plant. It soon became calm and staggered slowly. Then it ate the second plant and grew energetic and wild. These two plants were revealed to be kava and sugarcane.
Thus was born the Tongan belief that kava connects the drinker to the spirit world, invoking calm, peace, and clarity. Even today, during the coronation of a Tu’i Tonga (King), sacred kava ceremonies are held to honor both tradition and the original sacrifice made by Kava kilia mai Faa’imata.
